The grim turn both concerned him and, oddly enough, reassured him at once. He'd often wondered about the level of freedom available to consorts, and if they could even dislike those they were hired to serve. That response appeared to somewhat answer that question, and it heartened him to know they possessed more freedom than he feared.
And it also made everything worse in another way, and his grip on her arm tightened to a reassuring squeeze.
"...Of course I would return. You were a lovely companion this evening, and until the explosions, I'd say this was the best dinner function I've attended. I wouldn't leave you to them longer than I must."
